What is the connection between current events and economics?

As part of my economics final i have to write a brief reflection about the connection between current events and economics. These are some questions i have to answer in my reflection:
1) How much does one have an impact on the other?
2) What is the value of studying current events?

impact is large and immediate, so it worth studying them.
