Hiking, should, Wear, backpack

How old should my dog be to wear a hiking backpack?

I have a 5 month old German Shepherd/ Australian Shepherd mix and I was wondering how old she needs to be to:
1. Wear an empty hiking pack around the house
2. Go on a hike with her empty pack
3. Carry weight on her hike

I would wait to buy one until she's full grown so you don't end up wasting money. That's also when she can start carrying a full pack. Only when she's full grown can her bones and joints handle the extra weight. So not until she's after a year old at the youngest.
